Description

This hearty and comforting hamburger potato casserole is the perfect family dinner. Layers of seasoned ground beef, tender potatoes, and gooey cheese are baked in a creamy sauce for a satisfying meal that’s sure to please everyone at the table.


Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 large potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef with onion and garlic. Drain excess fat and set aside.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk and beef broth until smooth. Add thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper. Simmer until thickened.
  4. Layer half the potato slices in the baking dish. Top with half the beef mixture and half the cheese. Pour half the sauce over the layers.
  5. Repeat layers with remaining ingredients.
  6. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until potatoes are tender and cheese is bubbly.
  7. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
